Each substance has its own absorption spectrum, which makes it possible to identify a substance (by direct comparison with known samples or through databases) or to check its degree of purity. To carry out quantitative analyzes, monochromatic rays are used, consisting of radiations of a single frequency. Given the difficulties of having rays endowed with this property, radiation beams comprising a very narrow band of the spectrum, ie almost monochromatic beams, are used. Quantitative determinations are based on the fact that, when a radiation passes through a solution, it is absorbed more or less intensely depending on the concentration; in other words, absorption depends on the concentration.
